There is an interesting history to the Cambodia gambling dens that lie just over the dividing line from next door Thailand, in which gambling den gaming is not permitted. Eight gambling dens are anchored in a relatively small location in the metropolis of Poipet in Cambodia. This collection of Cambodia gambling halls is in an excellent location, a 3 to four hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the 2 most popular gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia casinos do a thriving business with Thai laborers and visitors from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with just a few Westerners. The amazing capital acquired from the gambling halls ranges from $7.5 million to over 12.5 million dollars, and there are a few controls constraints for gambling den ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mostly Thai; however, funding sources are ambiguous. The borders are formally open from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are allegedly necessary to cross, there are methods and means around this, as is true of many border crossings.
The 1st Cambodia casinos premiered in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were required to close in 1998, leaving just one gambling hall in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, a moored ship gambling den, features one hundred and fifty slots and sixty tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with 42 tables of mini-punto banco, 4 tables of vingt-et-un, ten of roulette, two of Caribbean Stud Poker, and 1 each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.
The 1st casino in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown quickly followed. There are 150 slots and five table games at the Golden Crown and one hundred and four slot machines and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newest Holiday Palace Casino and Resort highlights 300 one armed bandits and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 slot machines and ninety six table games, including eighty seven baccarat (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Additionally, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slots and 66 of the familiar table games, as well as one table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight gambling dens in Poipet, also in a motel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slot machines and ninety seven games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in a multinational resort and hotel complex that contains a number of comforts on top of the gambling den, which has 10,000 square feet of 130 one armed bandits and eighty eight table games.
